As many of your aware, the United States celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr today. For many this means parades that end in shoot outs. For others, a day off. For politicians, an opportunity to pander to voters espousing their civil rights voting records and political correctness. For a small few, it’s an opportunity reflect and plan on leadership and history.

Men and women like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Stokley Carmichael, Sandra Brown, Huey Newton and others of their generation led  because they believed change was needed and they had the capacity to be a change agent. They weren’t taught to lead, it was neither popular nor safe- It just was. These individuals, these leaders they received critics at home, their decision was made with prescience and circumspection for the needs of the larger group. They were, at essence, unselfish in their actions, putting beliefs ahead of personal gain.

In looking at their history, we learn that turning the other cheek lead to death, slapping back leads to death and leading an uprising doesn’t lead to peaceful nights and happy golden years  But we also learn that the measure of a man isn’t in safe, popular choices, but in choices that involve self sacrifice, foresight and rock solid determination. In hip hop, our generation has taken those tenants and crafted themselves millions, but little else. There was nothing done for the greater good, in fact it is arguable that the Hip Hop generation of moguls and leaders in fact did more to harm the youth and future generations in the selfish pursuit of personal wealth and infamy.  Our current cultural leaders and figureheads spout rhetoric and manufacture conflict to increase their net gain, notoriety and air time.

Meanwhile, Black men in prison outnumber those in colleges 3 to 1. And across the country, boulevards named in memory of a man of peace and non violence are commonly believed to be the most dangerous and crime ridden streets in urban America.  Huey, Martin, Malcolm and Sandra defined many of the ideologies that have made each of us who we are- without them, there would be no green eyes  in existence to type these words. What have we gifted to future generations bedsides debt, poor health, and catchy dances? The time has come for us to stop waiting for a new leader to be anointed and start rising to the challenge ourselves.
