The Second Amendment Lives on!!

Many of you may not be aware, (I sure as hell wasn’t), that today in D.C., the Supreme Court was interpreting the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment.  For those not up to par on their amendment verbatim, the 2nd amendment states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”  In a case brought to the Supreme Court due to Washington D.C.’s strict (and now struck down) 32 year ban on guns, the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for citizens to be forbidden from owning a gun for purposes of self-defense.

Personally speaking, I don’t have any major issues with guns. I subscribe to the theory that if those in power get to have one, and then I sure as hell do too.  The larger issue I took from reading this article, however, was not that the second amendment was upheld, but that it had been up for debate, meaning could be overturned, meaning Joe Citizen’s guns would be illegal, meaning the only ones allowed guns would be the place and militia, meaning police state and powerless citizens. Or maybe I’m just paranoid.

Granted, many, if not, most other countries have gun laws far stricter than the US, and their citizens are not generally living under constant fear of their government (or are you?).  I’m not gun happy, and think its unnecessary for ever random person to walk around packing heat, but I support the rights of those who want to be able to do so, and think its an important right of US Citizens.

I do agree there should be restrictions on guns. There is no need for Chris across the street to have a machine gun, because a) I’m a good neighbor and dot want to get shot and B) lets be real—aint no need for a machine gun unless you are in the middle of a war zone (and for real, despite what you’ve heard B’more & Philly don’t actually count, take your ass to the Congo or Kandahar and then we can talk). Perverts and crazies shouldn’t have guns. Scorned lovers shouldn’t be able to cop a pistil and cap that ass because they got pissy.  Teachers shouldn’t bring guns to school, nor should students (Even in B’more & Philly).  I’m not unreasonable, nor in support of a nation with out some type of law and order. But I’m not down with living in a nation where a president appoints supreme court appointees who will enact and and/or overturn laws that will keep him in power, invade and start wars unprovoked in sovereign nations killing tens of thousands of servicemen and citizens (damn too late for that one), give him more power and take away my own.

Perhaps this ruling, aside from its obvious and immediate effect on D.C. folks, will have us all take a closer look at the Constitution and Bill of Rights and learn what rights are ours, and start paying attention closely to what rights those is power want to take away.
